Star Position Papers: Ukraine
Nuclear Proliferation
Hello. I am Erik Larsson of Ukraine. My fellow representatives are Carson Besser and Jesse Bacardi. I will be talking to you today about Nuclear Proliferation and Ukraine’s views on Nuclear power and weapons. Before I do that though, let me ask you this. Do you feel safe in a world where any day could be your last because of a nuclear war? Todays world is much safer than the cold war as many think. But what if the 17,000 or so Nuclear weapons got into the wrong hands, let’s say terrorists? What if two countries went to war and one country had nuclear weapons and sent a missile over enemy lines? It would change the war and bring the worlds attention possibly causing World War 3, which might end humanity as we know it. There's even another possibility of an accidental launching could create accidental havoc in the world. Ukraine is trying to prevent any of those catastrophes from happening. Please join us in supporting Nuclear Nonproliferation ( a very big word meaning stop the spread of nukes).
There are over 17,000 nuclear weapons in the world. Another unacceptable fact is that only 9 countries possess these weapons. If we are not careful, there might be a tenth and eleventh etc. Let’s do some math.... um...that’s about a1900 average nuclear weapons per country. Look at the damage only 2 caused in Japan! It is very difficult to keep track of that many nuclear weapons. If one of Russia’s 8000 or so nuclear weapons got lost, it could be a very serious situation. Ukraine thinks that people need to start disarming nuclear weapons and storing them properly. If that country can’t store them properly, the UN should have the IAEA assist that country.
There have been over 2000 nuclear tests conducted ever since since 1945. This is an approximate estimate but still a pretty good guess. 2000 tests is a lot of tests! There are four types of testing; atmospheric, underground, exoatmospheric, and underwater. Atmospheric is basically just testing nuclear weapons on land. The most popular testing sites include Nevada, which have been bombed over 900 times! Ukraine thinks we need to stop this because it contaminates the area around civilized areas. This is not safe. Underground is testing nuclear weapons underground. North Korea has been doing this and it has brought suspicion to them. When people read that there are earthquakes in North Korea it becomes a little obvious something is going on. Exoatmospheric is testing nukes in outer space. That’s not very safe either because there are a lot of things that could go wrong and cause destruction. Underwater testing is self explanatory. There have been a very large amount of nuclear testing underwater and it is contaminated over 30,000 acres of land (or water). That’s a lot of dead fishies! We need to stop nuclear weapons testing because in reality, if a country says it doesn’t want to use nuclear weapons, there is no need to test them. Right?
The third fact and probably the one that makes Ukraine not want to do anything with nuclear power is because of Chernobyl. On the 26th of April 1986, in the USSR (now Ukraine), one of the largest global disasters occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. This is widely considered the largest nuclear disaster. It is 1 of only 2 level 7 disasters. Only the Fukushima event in Japan can contend to be a more catastrophic event. So what happened is the scientists carried out an experiment to see how their nuclear reactor 4 would react to low outputs of energy. All was going well until a scientist made the mistake of dropping the energy level to 1% instead of the normal/safe 30%. This spiked the energy levels and the radiation started going crazy. They kept feeding the turbine with more energy even though it was unsafe. This caused the initial spike which fractured the control rods and caused the initial explosion. The explosion let out a massive amount of radiation into the atmosphere. Everyone inside the building was automatically killed. Then the first firefighters and helicopters arrived. The helicopters and the pilots were not warned about the radiation clouds that caused them to crash and kill all passengers. The firefighters did not have the right equipment and so while helping others they knew they were killing themselves in the process. For the next several days, thousands of people were evacuated and the fight against contaminating most of Europe was in full progress. They did not have the type of equipment to safely fight the radiation so mostly everyone who went to put clay and lead on the area was killed immediately or in the days to follow. It was like fighting an invisible enemy, trying to fight with your eyes closed. People would just collapse and howl out while their bodies were being mutilated by the Nuclear waste. This was a very scary event and shocked the world. It really shows you how 1 persons mistake can lead to many deaths. The total death toll was 31 but that were just the bodies they could make out. Today we still don’t really know how many deformed dead bodies lay out in the Killzone.
So overall, the Ukraine wants to end nuclear weapons for once and for all and even if we can’t do that at least end the spread of nuclear weapons. Our ideas are have the IAEA assist countries that can’t help themselves. Also have safety be a priority at Nuclear Power Plants. Because of Chernobyl, you can still see the cancers and deformities today. Now you see why Ukraine wants to end nuclear proliferation. Support Ukraine by agreeing with the NPT and end Nuclear Proliferation. No more Nukes! No More Nukes!
